Sendong, Pablo and Yolanda. These are just few of the typhoons that struck Philippines and made an unforgettable aftermath to the Filipinos. These typhoons especially Yolanda took thousands of lives in the Philippines, took every livelihood of some Filipinos affected and most of all gave the Filipinos the fear that can never taken away from them. The intriguing question would be what causes these massive typhoons? Why is it that these typhoons take Philippines as their first target to feel their fury? Is it always going to be this way? Is there anything we can do? Do we have a choice?
Basically, Climate Change causes the intensified natural disasters that are happening around us. Climate Change is the root creation of the massive typhoons that struck Philippines. What really is Climate Change? According to the definition on the web, climate change is the change in global climate patterns apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards, attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. What actually causes climate change? According to Amber Jenkins of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory of California Institute Technology that certain gases in the atmosphere block heat from escaping. Long-lived gases, remaining semi-permanently in the atmosphere, which do not respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature, are described as “forcing” climate change whereas gases, such as water, which respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature are seen as “feedbacks.”
Now, I’m going to ask again. Is it always going to be like this? No, it will not going to be like this for a long time. Unless, we’ll be considerate and be cautious of the actions that we are doing around us and in our environment. Let’s start in our own houses by throwing properly our garbage, stop burning plastics and start using energy efficient products. Is there anything we can do? Yes, there are many things that we can do to fight the effects of climate change. We are human beings, we have the capacity to think what must not and what must be done to our environment. Do we have a choice? We always have the choice to change what is happening around us. Let’s start with ourselves. Change starts with us.
